My take on styling in photography: how I create visual stories that sell
Through thoughtful styling, photography becomes a storytelling tool, where every element works together to create a compelling visual journey.
Creative direction and styling
Styling is the secret sauce that transforms photography from ordinary to extraordinary, whether it’s fashion photography or product photography. In editorial shoots and fashion, styling goes beyond just selecting clothes; it’s about creating a cohesive visual story that reflects the brand’s identity and appeals to its target audience. A wardrobe stylist, along with the fashion stylist and creative director, work together to ensure that every outfit, accessory, and piece of clothing is perfectly aligned with the shoot’s creative vision. This collaboration brings the images to life, transforming them from simple photos to powerful fashion editorials that capture attention and inspire viewers.
Similarly, in product photography, stylists play an equally important role. It’s not just about placing a product in front of a camera and clicking a button; it’s about using props, backgrounds, and lighting to create an atmosphere that enhances the product’s appeal. Just like in fashion shoots, where every detail is carefully curated, product styling requires a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of the brand. A professional photographer who is also skilled in styling can elevate the images, making them not just visually stunning but also strategically effective in conveying the product’s unique selling points.
Product styling & props: Beyond the basics
We’ve all seen those lifeless product shots with a lone item awkwardly placed against a white backdrop—hardly inspiring, right? At NFE Branding Co, we believe in adding that extra layer of creativity to make your products shine.
Why styling matters
Here at NFE Branding Co, we don’t just press the button that magically takes the pretty pictures. Our job titles could also be considered creative director, prop stylist, model, set designer, retoucher and customer service extraordinaire.
Concept planning and styling has many benefits, including:
- Creates a visual story: Styling helps to set the scene and tell a story about your products. It allows you to showcase how they fit into a particular lifestyle or aesthetic, creating an aspirational image that your customers will want to emulate.
- Enhances product appeal: Carefully chosen props and styling elements can highlight your product’s key features and benefits, making it more desirable to potential customers.
- Differentiates your brand: Styling and accessories help you create a unique visual identity for your brand, setting you apart from the competition. When the end goal is to stop the scroll, you need to do everything you can to stand out and be unique!
- Boosts engagement: Styled product photos are more likely to capture attention and encourage interaction on a social media post.
- Maximizes your investment: Professional product photography is an investment in your brand. Investing in expert styling ensures your images don’t just look beautiful but also work hard to drive sales and boost your brand’s image.
No need for a separate stylist…
Why hire separately when you can have a seasoned professional who seamlessly blends photography and styling, saving you both time and money? We are a one-stop shop for all your product photography needs, saving you time and money while ensuring a cohesive vision for your photo shoot.
I’ve worked in the creative industry for 16 years, practicing, researching, learning and collaborating with other designers, photographers, stylists and models around the world along the way. I love being involved in idea generation for photo shoots and marketing planning / strategy.
The art of styling: a creative vision for your brand.
Styling is more than just throwing a few random props together. It’s an art that requires a keen eye for detail, a deep understanding of your brand, and a touch of creative flair.
As a photographer and stylist, I bring a unique perspective to every shoot. I carefully consider the colours, textures, and overall mood of the scene to create a cohesive visual narrative that showcases your products in the best possible light. I also pride myself on my ability to craft the perfect composition, balancing the elements in the frame resulting in an image that is both visually appealing and strategically effective.
My styling arsenal
I have an extensive collection of props and backdrops at my disposal, including:
- Natural surfaces: Marble, wood, stone, tiles and other organic elements that add texture and warmth. These natural surfaces and neutral colours can play a huge part in setting the style of your photo shoot, especially when it comes to flat lay photography.
- Colourful backdrops: A wide range of vinyl backdrops in various solid colour and patterns to complement your brand’s aesthetic.
- Fabrics: From soft linens to luxurious silk, I have a variety of fabrics to create different moods and textures.
- Decorative elements: Unique objects, plants, and other decorative items that add interest and personality to your photos.
- Styling plinths and stands: I have a large selection of white and coloured styling blocks you you would see traditionally in a product photography studio. I have also added to that collection over the years with a variety of interesting marble and acrylic stands, along with a variety of other interesting shapes and textures to stand products on.
I’m always on the hunt for new, inspiring props to keep my collection fresh, ensuring that every shoot is unique and tailored to your brand. I also offer personalised recommendations and inspiration for every client through our initial brand strategy sessions, where we discuss colours, lighting options, props for your project before shooting. It is important that the overall aesthetic is perfectly aligned to your brand identity and a focus on your marketing goals.
Natural light photography
Utilising natural light is crucial for creating images that are both visually appealing and true to life, as it enhances the colours and textures of your products. There’s an authenticity that only natural light can bring—no artificial glow can quite match the warmth and vibrancy it adds to every shot. It’s like nature’s own filter, making your products pop in a way that feels real and relatable.
I’ve spent years perfecting the art of harnessing natural light, using it to craft images that aren’t just beautiful but also packed with the kind of authenticity that today’s consumers crave (especially when it comes to skincare product photography). Whether it’s the soft, diffused glow of the golden hour or the bright, airy feel of morning light, we know how to use these ever-changing conditions to your advantage.
Natural light photography isn’t just about catching the right moment—it’s about creating a connection. The textures, colours, and subtle shadows it reveals make your products not just look good, but irresistible. It’s the secret to that effortless, UGC style vibe that resonates so strongly on social media, making your brand feel both aspirational and approachable.
Natural light as a styling tool
Natural light isn’t just about illumination; it’s a styling tool in its own right.
Light and shadow interplay to add depth and dimension, crafting a dynamic look that studio lighting can’t match. By strategically positioning products to catch the natural shadows, we can highlight textures, emphasize shapes, and create a mood that feels both organic and artfully curated.
At NFE Branding Co, we use natural light to sculpt our shots, letting the subtle interplay of highlights and shadows bring out the best in your products. Whether it’s casting a soft shadow to add drama or letting the light wrap around a product to enhance its form, we harness the natural world’s own styling tools to create images that are as unique and captivating as your brand.
